This rather unique wine is prepared using a blend of two lesser-known northern grape varietals, commonly found in the Eastern European regions, including Austria.

Zweigelt and Blaufrankisch may be difficult to pronounce correctly, but the resulting wine is easy to remember.  Very fruit-forward in its presentation, this blend has aromatic qualities found in only a few wines   A very fruit-forward red wine, rich in tannin, has a spicy character and pairs well with red meats, game, and specialty-cheese products, including Blue Cheese.

The commemorative label for this vintage, reflects the new home for our family heirloom, a 1960 Studebaker Hawk, which was originally purchased by Graydon’s father, Jack.  It’s new home (or haven) is a fitting location for such a classic, amongst the quietness of the site and the natural birds of prey which also frequent the skies around the Winery.

Recent awards for Hawk’s Haven, include a Silver at the 2017 Savour NW Wine Competition.

VQA describes Marechal Foch (pronounced “MAR-e-SHALL-fosh) as Fruity, Raspberry, Cherry, Smokey, Caramel and Butterscotch.  Other flavours include plums and spice.

French plant breeder Eugene Kuhlmann (1858-1932) was the creator of this and of several other hybrid varieties, most of which now have been phased out of vineyards in France and North America. The variety is named for a French hero Of World War One, Marshall Ferdinand Foch, commander in chief of the Allied armies in 1918 (An apparent admirer of French leaders, Kuhlmann also created another blood-red variety that was named Léon Millot after the prime minister.)

Like the other hybridizers of his day, Kuhlmann created new varieties by crossing native American vines with European vines in a search for productive and disease-resistant varieties. The comparison to Burgundy, which is made with Pinot Noir, may be have been inspired by the vaguely similar earth aromas and smoky note in the finish of a Maréchal Foch wine.

Recently awarded with a medal at the 2017 NorthWest Wine Summit, you can enjoy it soon!!
